~Flower Buds~

A long time ago, the goddess lived amongst the humans in her own house by the lake. Everyone revered her and they regularly gave her offerings and left her alone, deigning only to approach her in need or when she wished for their company.

She enjoyed festivals and often came and she would dance with all the young men of the village and many amongst them fell in love with her but dared not approach her for who had the courage to court a goddess?

But one day, fed up with yearning, someone boasted that he would make the goddess his. He gathered all his courage and approached the goddess’ cottage by the lake. When she answered the door, he fell to his knees offering her flowers and promises of love. The goddess was taken aback. No one had ever asked for her hand before and her heart warmed for this man who stood before her and she accepted his love.

And they wed on the month after. The wedding was grand for the entire village had helped in the celebration but there were those who envied the man. “She only said yes because he had been the first to ask,” they said, forgetting that they had not even thought of asking and so they plotted and, during the wedding, poisoned the man’s wine.

The goddess had no knowledge of the deed, having long ago given that aspect over to another and Dirge, who was the guardian of death, would not speak of it to Raine for though she was his master, he was compelled to see his role through by the spark of Raine that gave him power. Thus it was that he died on their wedding night and Raine, distraught, quarreled with Dirge demanding that he bring her love back though Dirge could not for he had already ushered the man into the afterlife, a place where he had no power over.

Months passed without word of the goddess. By the time the villagers had gone to check, she had disappeared from her cottage. On a table, miraculously alive, were the flowers the man had given her. They had reverted back to flower buds. The men of the village, in their mourning, built a small shrine for the goddess—separate from her church—by the falls and left there the bouquet of flower buds. And people say that if you come to the shrine with a wish and if you it were the 1000 wish made in the shrine, then one of the flowers from the bouquet would bloom and your wish would be granted though they also say that a person can only ever make one wish in the shrine for his or her lifetime.

And the flower buds, the treasure of the village turned town, is the reason why the town is called Flowerbud.

~The Crying Cave~

Two small children, having disobeyed their parents strayed into the woods to play. Unbeknownst to them, it was the day when the Wild Hunt passed through the woodlands of Flowerbud and, upon hearing the terrible horns, and the sound of their magical hounds, the children ran with all their strength, fearing to be caught or killed by the for they did not know if the whoever lead the Mythical Hunt was a hero, villain, deity or of the fair-folk for the leader changed yearly and even if whoever it was who lead the hunt was a kindly spirit, they would be forced to join it and disappear reappearing only once a year when the hunt passed through Flowerbud once more.

And so they ran and ran until they reached a cave by the mountain and there hid. The sound of the Hunt soon passed and when the noise subsided, they heard a different sound—that of crying. Fearful, they ran for their lives once more finally returning to the village and telling the story of their adventure. So it was that they spoke of a haunted cave and it was said that hidden there was the body of a woman, which had been murdered by pirates and hidden so that no one would know of the terrible deed.

The one day, six strangers came to the village. They asked of the cave and, with some guides, ventured into the woods in search of it. Two days passed and they had yet to return and then on the third day the guides could be seen entering the town in a daze. They were tired and hungry and thirsty and the villagers immediately gave them food and water so that they may find out what had happened.

They had come upon the cave on the first day, the guides told the villagers. They feared for ghosts but the solemn man with black hair told them that there were no ghosts by the cave for if there were he would have known and so did they approach the cave all six of them. The redhead shouted at the cave, scolding whoever was in it for mourning for too long, the sleepy girl begged the woman to come out promising dreams of his beloved, whilst the fair-haired youth asked with all his heart for her to come out. Only the solemn one and the young girl with pure white hair kept silent. Finally the six succeeded in calling her out. The last the guide saw was a beautiful woman and then the sleepy one came to them and they fell into a deep slumber. They woke two days after, relieved that their sleep had not slept the sleep of the enchanted that turned men into trees, and immediately returned to the village.

Having heard the story and the description of the woman in the cave, the elders said that it was the goddess Raine, no doubt still mourning for the man he had lost so many years (for it was about fifty years since his death) ago and they further told the guides that the six were no doubt the first guardians, the mortals who became gods and goddesses to aid Raine in her work.
